At Pilbara Health Centre our Podiatrists are dedicated to providing a high level of foot and ankle care for patients of all ages. Our Podiatrist will prevent, diagnose, treat and rehabilitate medical conditions of the feet.
In particular, Podiatrists have a fundamental role to play in identifying and managing patients at risk of developing diabetes related foot complications. Patients who are newly diagnosed with diabetes, or who have limited understanding of the impact of diabetes on their foot health, will often be referred to a Podiatrist for foot care. This is usually the first opportunity for patients to be screened for diabetes related foot complications, such as peripheral neuropathy, peripheral arterial disease, foot ulceration and Charcot neuroarthropathy.
Early and regular clinical examinations of the feet, and prompt management of common problems such as corns, calluses and blisters, can have a tangible impact on the risk of developing more serious foot complications. The management of high pressure areas and providing education regarding appropriate footwear are other fundamental aspects of foot care in patients with diabetes. National and international guidelines recommend all people with diabetes should receive an annual foot screening by an appropriately trained health professional, and Podiatrists, as foot and ankle specialists, are the primary care clinicians best placed to do this.
